Scene & ResPublica Release Green Paper on Community Energy

Scene's Jelte Harnmeijer and Matthew Parsons authored a new report, published by ResPublica and entitled: The Community Renewables Economy: Starting up, scaling up and spinning out. The report can be found here. The report was published on September 10th, 2013, and includes the latest data on existing UK community capacity, plus barriers to growth and recommendations for national and local government, plus the private sector on how to further grow community energy.

Business Green wrote:
"According to Respublica, communities could deliver almost one-fifth of the UK's total renewable energy capacity by 2020, up from less than one per cent today. The Community Renewables Economy report concludes that the market for community-owned green energy projects could potentially grow 89-fold, to 5,270MW by the end of the decade."

SCENE Published in Zero Carbon Britain Report

SCENE's Vijay Bhopal and Darcy Pimblett have been included in a new report Zero Carbon Britain - Rethinking the Future, launched on 16 July. The piece, dealing with how community energy fits into the zero carbon picture, can be seen here.

Zero Carbon Britain said:

By combining a smart approach to diet, building, energy and land-use it is possible to rapidly reduce emissions to net zero by 2030.
Smart demand management and intelligent use of surplus electricity in combination with carbon neutral synthetic gas and liquid fuels means we can ensure energy supplies in all weather conditions.
Rethinking our diets means the UK can produce the vast majority of the food required to keep us healthy – whilst also reducing agricultural impacts and freeing up land to grow energy crops and capturing carbon.
Land freed up by changes in diet enables us to balance out all greenhouse gas emissions that cannot be eliminated from industry, waste and agriculture using natural safe, sustainable and reliable methods of capturing carbon.

The changes outlined in the report can also help us adapt to expected changes in climate, whilst helping make us resilience against those changes we can’t predict.
As well as rising to the climate challenge – the transition outlined in the new report has a range of additional benefits – creating over a million jobs, having a positive impact on our economy and on our health and wellbeing both as individuals, and as a society;

The future really doesn’t have to be dark! Working out what it would be like to live in a world which is actually rising to the urgent 21st century challenges is an empowering and creative process!
We hope you will join us in getting people talking about a Zero Carbon Britain.

Our UK-wide community energy map and knowledge exchange portal is almost ready for use, and has been launched on-line ahead of its unveiling to the Regional Studies Association Research Network on Friday 22nd March.

Check out the beta version . We hope to have this live in full functionality by April!

Happy Holidays!

From all at SCENE we would like to wish you a happy holidays and a relaxing start to the new year. Our office is closed until January 2nd, but we will all be answering emails in the meantime. (click to read more)

2012 has brought our organisation forward in leaps and bounds. Whilst our personnel has changed during the course of the year, our vision of bridging the gap between communities and private sector organisations, has not. This vision is becoming a reality, not only through our own work, but in the sector at large. We were delighted to join forces with MBM Commercial, RSP Consulting Engineers and Geddes Consulting in the creation of Sustainable Heat and Power (SHPL). We are confident that in partnership, 2013 will bring about innovative and equitable joint venture projects which empower communities and start to bridge the sectoral divide which poses such a deep problem at present.

Our UK-wide knowledge exchange, mapping, guidance and investment portal - has been live in pilot form for a few weeks now, and is almost ready to launch in full functionality early in the new year. We would like to thank the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation, Development Trusts Association Scotland, Climate Challenge Fund, EnGAGE Scotland and all of our staff past and present - Charlie, Stan, Rebecca, Anna, Maithu, Paul, Ashton, Marieke, Christina, Neil and Ciorstaidh - for all of their hard work. This has been a major undertaking and it would not have been possible without encouragement and interest from community groups themselves. We now have information from 868 projects and can't wait for SCENE Connect to go live. As an output from this project, SCENE was able to produce the most detailed overview of community renewable energy ever produced in Scotland. Our Report on Community Energy in Scotland looked at amount, distribution, size and types of projects as well as motivations, structures and key success criteria. The report received very good feedback and now acts as a baseline study in the sector, allowing a deeper understanding of where we are, where we want to be and hopefully even a few insights into how we might get there - we look forward to undertaking similar studies in the rest of the UK in 2013.

SCENE Presents a series of informal lectures and presentations on renewable energy started in the summer and we had a further event with special guest Dr Maitland Mackie in September. These events aim to engage with those who work both inside and outside the field of community energy, leading to interesting and balanced discussion on relevant topics. We would like to thank Gemma Lawrence for her help in organising these events. We have also joined the organisation committee for Global Energy Systems 2013 which will take place in June at Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh. We hope to use this opportunity to bring community energy to the table in a high profile, worldwide conference.

We hope to hear from you in the new year with renewed energy and drive. Until then, happy holidays!

Alex, Jelte and Vijay

, a new community renewable energy knowledge exchange platform is now live in pilot form. We thank all of our community participants so far, and our dedicated team who have been working on the idea since the end of 2011.

SCENE Connect aims to increase transparency of renewable energy development throughout the UK, Europe and the world and to facilitate information access and informed choice for local communities. Thanks to seed funding from The Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation, our community renewable energy database project is being developed with the aim of filling some of the communication and information gaps that currently constrain the community renewable energy sector globally.

Our pilot interface is now live. Any comments or feedback is most welcome and should be directed to

In this second SCENE Presents we will be joined by two eminent figures, Dr Maitland Mackie owner and Chairman of Mackie's and Glasgow-based documentary film maker, David Graham Scott.

SCENE Researchers Jelte and Anna Harnmeijer and IT specialist Charlie Loyd have had a paper published in the latest issue of the journal Regions, from the Regional Studies Association. The paper outlines the reasoning behind and progress towards a global database of community led renewable energy projects.

Our project SCENE Connect is an ambitious attempt to achieve this feat, starting here in the UK. The paper can be accessed here.
